2002

In 2002, Gerd Wahlstrom, The Ambassador of Norway in Bangladesh and Mrs. Ruby Gaznavi of Aranya invited some artists to experiment with natural dyes, to create works of art. This included artists like Rokeya Sultana from Bangladesh, Sarah Sutro from the US and later senior artists like Prof. Md. Kibria.

I spent three months experimenting and working with the artisans in Aranya. First with painting on cotton and silk with the dyes. These pieces were processed by the artisans at Aranya and it was exciting to see the transformation. Later I started working with natural dyes on handmade paper. These works are meditations, where the colours come straight from nature. The kantha stitch from Bangladesh, where women recycled old saris to make warm quilts for their families, became an integral and recurring motif in my work.
