https://alkamathur.com/2019 2019 Dadi’s Red Potli Soon after I lost my mother in law, I was sitting in her room repairing some old garments and got fascinated by her sewing kit with bits and bobs tucked into little pouches or potlis, much like the stories, women hide away in the crevices of their subconscious. These objects suddenly took on a new meaning and became a mnemonic device to remember her by. I started stitching these onto handmade paper, previously stained with dyes and pigments, into 32 tiny works that fit into her red, hand stitched potli. <img width="4356" height="1835" width_o="4356" in my work. I photograph it, but interrupt a direct reading, into compositions of lines, planes, textures and symbols, where the horizon mediates between the earth and the sky into an abstracted reality.
